In which I'm proud to be an American

I know I promised a blog about modesty, and I have it written (just like my next two Romans blogs). But I have this bad habit of putting pen to paper for a draft and never putting fingers to keyboard to finalize it. I got the ap for my phone, which is where I'm posting from now, but I won't be typing any lengthy blogs from here. Often times, a little idea for a short blog comes to me, and now I have a quick way of getting them out there. Thats what this is...

Tonight, while we were getting ready for our little family cookout, I asked Eric and Logan what they thought the best thing about America is. They both had great answers, but, being me, I had to think a while to come up with mine.

Honestly, I truly believe that the American Dream is the best thing about our great country. I know that seems like a cop-out and it is kind of out dated, but thats my answer.

And really, its not as out dated as you might think. It is ingrained in the American psyche that every person has worth and deserves to voice their opinion. We do it differently now than we ever have, but bloggers and facebookers are out every day posting their own little version of Poor Richard's Almanac. We're online signing petitions, stating opinions, and airing our grievances to any who will read them. We still have that voice! We don't necessarily use it in the most productive manner, but we have it and we do what we will.

The American Dream is that every American can be successful in their own little way if they just work for it. I'm not here to talk about recent socialistic policies or the 1% or entitlement programs. The fact is, we CAN be successful if we work for it. Thats what this country is still about! You might never be president, but by golly, if you work hard and smart, you can have a house, a car, and whatever you set your mind to. Its something we take for granted, but many in the world do not have these opportunities.

I guess the greatest thing about the American Dream is that we are free to dream it! We're free to blog it or write it in to the newspaper. We're free to pursue it, or not, if thats our desire.

So, this Independence Day, while sitting on my porch listening to the fireworks, I'm standing up for patriotism. Despite all the problems in our country, I still truly believe that this is the greatest country in the world, and I am proud and blessed to be a part of it. And if you disagree, you are free to dream about changing it and you're free to stand up and make the change.
